Welcome to our regular newsletter. The world of mobile technology is moving at a tremendous pace. Today we expect advanced technology to bring efficiency gains to every aspect of our business. Businesses are looking very hard at improving the productivity of their mobile workforce and are ever more turning to technology to achieve these gains.

Alamein are committed to remaining at the forefront of innovation. We do this by working with software developers and deliver them a range of state of the art components to enable them to extend their application capabilities into the mobile workplace.

In this newsletter we look at:

* eliminating mountains of office paper work by integrating worker communications with office based systems;

*  enabling Thames Valley Operators to improve their community transport service by introducing driver messaging, tracking and navigation to their Transport Scheduling System; and

*  O2 has announced the release of the XDA Orbit 2 PDA phone a year after its launch of the original flagship handset.

We would welcome your comments and feedback on this newsletter and would ask that you forward it to any colleague who may find it of interest.

And finally

Seasons greetings and a prosperous New Year to one and all

Efficiency on the move

Efficiency and control are important factors in competent fleet management - but what are the issues that so often prevent them from happening in the workplace?

Communications is often a key issue - from the cost of mobile phone calls to the difficulty in contacting workers who are out in the field. Trying to find out if jobs have been completed, if they were successful, if the worker is available for more work, all add to the stress and noise levels in a busy control office.

Thames Valley Operators (TVO) comprises Slough Community Transport, Wokingham’s Keep Mobile service and Swindon Dial-a-Ride and each section shared a need to track vehicles and drivers in order to provide the most efficient service possible.

Techie Tip - HTC P3300/XDA Orbit SD Card Enhancement

HTC have released a patch for the P3300 (XDA Orbit) to improve the handling
mechanism of SD memory cards. The Alamein MNTS system utilises SD cards as
TomTom uses them to store and access the driving maps. Alamein have tested
this enhancement and believe it improves overall system stabliilty and
reduced 'lockups'. More information and download is available from the web
locations below.

PLEASE NOTE that this patch is applicable to HTC P3300/XDA Orbit ONLY.
